A beloved child has many names – Remonte TEX, Affen TEX, Froddo TEX...

When shopping for transitional-season or winter shoes, you’ve probably wondered what on earth all the TEX labels on shoes mean. You certainly aren’t the only one. 😃 In this article, we’ll explain a little more about what TEX means in shoes. 

Simply put, TEX means that the shoe has a waterproof or water-repellent membrane that helps keep moisture out while allowing water vapour, or moisture produced by the feet, to escape from the shoe. In practice, that’s exactly what you want from shoes in the rain, slush and on wet streets. 💦

The properties of the TEX membrane vary depending on the manufacturer and model. Of the brands in our selection, Remonte TEX promises to be water-repellent, while Affen TEX and Froddo TEX are waterproof.

And if we look at the details more closely, the shoe’s construction, seams, materials and, of course, how the shoe is used and cared for also affect its waterproofness in addition to the TEX membrane.

Please note that the TEX membrane is most often located between the outer material and the lining, on the inside of the shoe. To keep the shoe’s surface looking good for longer, it is always worth protecting it with a waterproofing spray, such as Carbon Pro or Organic Cover. The protective film created by the spray also makes the shoes easier to clean. Remember to reapply the protective spray every time you clean your shoes!

Why do different shoes have different names for the TEX membrane?

To be honest, it is purely a matter of licensing. 😊 For example, GORE-TEX is its own trademark and membrane technology. Many shoe manufacturers, on the other hand, have their own names for their TEX constructions, such as Remonte TEX, Affenzahn TEX and Froddo TEX. 

Why is a TEX shoe an excellent choice for the transitional season, autumn and spring?

Because of the Finnish weather. 😄 Sometimes it rains heavily, and sometimes we have to trudge through slush.

The idea behind TEX shoes is simply to make life easier! When a shoe has proper protection against moisture, you don’t have to wonder every time you go outside whether your socks will get wet at the first puddle. This naturally applies to adults too, but just think about how tempting puddles are to the little ones in the family. 😁❤️👶

IMPORTANT NOTE: A TEX membrane does not turn a shoe into a completely waterproof rubber boot.

If you stand in a puddle wearing TEX shoes for an extended period, water will unfortunately very likely find its way into the shoe sooner or later. However, for normal rainy weather, wet streets and everyday autumn activities, the TEX membrane is a fantastic invention. Rubber boots are the right footwear for longer periods outdoors in rainy weather. 😊💦
